General Engineering Technology

Degrees Offered
Associate in Applied Science.

Program Summary
The General Engineering Technology degree program is designed to support the workforce education needs of companies seeking to train their existing manufacturing line operators as engineer technicians.

Large companies that enroll many employees at once may arrange to have the program conducted onsite at their own facilities with a specialized curriculum. Other companies may choose to enroll one or more employees in the program, which is conducted at Vermont Tech’s Williston Campus at Blair Park.

The program is administered by Vermont Technical College's Technology Extension Division (TED).

TED programs offer applications-oriented science and technology curricula delivered in non-traditional modes to accommodate student and industry needs. The goal is to offer students a flexible, interdisciplinary path to the acquisition of basic engineering concepts and specific job-related skills needed to excel in their current positions and prepare for career growth.

Areas of Study
The curriculum consists of two sequences of courses – the first entails initial coursework common to all general engineering technology degree programs; the second is a sequence of technology foundation and technical emphasis courses specific to the workforce education needs being served.

The industry-specific technical courses are developed by a curriculum development team comprised of Vermont Tech faculty and representatives from the sponsoring organizations.

Career Opportunities
The program allows incumbent workers in technical industries to advance to engineer technician positions.

Industries served by the General Engineering Technology program include:
  • Aeronautic electronics;
  • Semiconductor processing;
  • Semiconductor electronics;
  • Manufacturing; and
  • Electromechanical engineering.
Some graduates of the program pursue additional education opportunities. The Associate’s degree in General Engineering Technology is transferable to Bachelor’s degree programs in business at Vermont Tech and other schools.

Enrollment Information
Qualified students may choose to pursue the complete Associate’s degree program, or may enroll in select courses for skill advancement in specific areas.

For those who pursue the Associate’s degree as full-time students, the program requires two years to complete. Most students, however, enroll in the program on a part-time basis taking only one course per semester while working full-time.

The typical program size is about 40 students.

Certifications
There are no specific professional certifications required of engineer technicians.

Prerequisites and Other Requirements
To be eligible for program enrollment, students must be employed in field related to engineering technology.

As students in this program have relevant skills and experience, it is fairly common to test out of required coursework or receive college credit for work experience. Each student is evaluated for prior skill and experience on an individual basis.

A minimum of 60 credits is required for this degree.

Campus Locations
The General Engineering Technology program is offered at Vermont Tech’s Williston campus and onsite at sponsoring companies.
